Getting a DTF transfer to stick is easy. Getting one to still look perfect after fifty washes is where most people come unstuck — and nine times out of ten the problem isn’t the transfer, it’s the press settings.

This guide covers the temperature, time and pressure you need for every common fabric, why your press probably isn’t as hot as it says it is, and how to fix the six faults we get asked about most. There’s a printable settings chart at the bottom.

One rule before we start: always follow the instructions supplied with your specific film, and test on a spare garment first. Adhesive powders vary between manufacturers, and a chart is a starting point, not gospel.

The short answer

For most transfers on cotton:

  • Temperature: 160°C (320°F)
  • Time: 10–15 seconds
  • Pressure: medium to firm
  • Then: peel, and press again for 5–10 seconds through parchment or a silicone sheet

For polyester and synthetics, drop to 150°C (300°F) and shorten the press slightly. That lower temperature isn’t about the adhesive — it’s about protecting the fabric underneath.

Why the recommended temperature varies so much

Search around and you’ll find advice ranging from 120°C to 165°C. That’s not because half the internet is wrong; it’s because DTF films are formulated differently.

Low-temperature films exist precisely so you can decorate heat-sensitive garments without scorching them. Some films apply at 145°C for exactly this reason. Meanwhile plenty of general-purpose films want 160°C on cotton.

The adhesive activates somewhere in the 150–165°C band on most films. What actually decides your setting is what the fabric can tolerate.

Settings by fabric

Check the care label for fibre content before you press anything. On a blend, cater to the most heat-sensitive fibre in the mix.

100% cotton — 160–165°C, 10–15 seconds, medium-firm. The most forgiving fabric and the best wash durability. Pre-press to drive out moisture.

Polyester — 150–155°C, 8–12 seconds, medium pressure, cover sheet on. Go hotter and you risk dye migration: the fabric dye gasses into your white ink and turns the print pink or grey, often a day later. Reds, maroons, royal blues and bright oranges are the worst offenders. White and pale poly is low risk.

Cotton/poly blends — 155–160°C. The higher the polyester percentage, the more you treat it like polyester, especially on dark colours. A white 65/35 behaves like cotton; a dark 35/65 does not.

Tri-blends — Use the lower polyester range and lighter pressure. They show press marks readily, so test first.

Performance and activewear — Almost always polyester with elastane. Keep to around 150°C and test on a hidden seam. A stretch-grade powder helps.

Nylon — One of the trickiest. 120–135°C, short dwell, light-to-medium pressure, always a cover sheet, and cold peel only. Peeling nylon warm lifts the edges nearly every time. Don’t use Teflon directly on nylon — it can bond to it. Use parchment or silicone.

Spandex and Lycra — These don’t melt, they deform. Lower heat, light pressure, and make the second press count. Place designs away from high-stretch areas or expect cracking.

Canvas and tote bags — Cotton temperature, but 15–20 seconds and firm pressure to push adhesive into the dense weave. Use a pressing pillow inside the bag.

Denim — 160–165°C, 18–20 seconds, firm. It’s thick, so give it time. Watch out for seams and rivets; a pillow levels things out. Stretch denim needs slightly less heat.

Hoodies, sweatshirts and fleece — 155–165°C, 15–18 seconds, firm pressure to compensate for the loft. Pre-press 3–5 seconds to flatten the pile, and slide a pillow inside to level the pocket seam.

Caps — Use a cap press if you have one, or a small platen with a pillow. 155–160°C, 12–15 seconds, front panel only, heat tape to hold position, cold peel. Foam-front caps need less heat.

Leather and faux leather — 145–150°C, light pressure, cold peel, and always test. Some PU leathers melt above 140°C.

Fabrics to avoid: waterproofed and DWR-treated shells, silicone or rubber-backed material, very loose weaves, and deep-pile sherpa or waffle knit. The adhesive can’t make even contact or the coating repels it. Recommend embroidery or a patch instead.

Hot peel, cold peel, warm peel

Peel type is a property of your film, not a preference. Get it wrong and the transfer fails.

  • Hot peel — remove the carrier immediately, while hot. Fast for production, less margin for error.
  • Cold peel — wait 30–60 seconds until fully cool. Strongest bond and cleanest fine detail. Best for nylon, Lycra, silk and leather.
  • Warm or "easy" peel — a middle window, on films engineered to tolerate either.

Reputable suppliers state the peel type on the packing slip. If you don’t know, cold peel. You can’t harm a hot-peel transfer by letting it cool, but peeling a cold-peel film hot will pull the ink up with it.

If the film starts lifting ink as you peel, lay it straight back down and re-press for 5–8 seconds.

The pressing workflow

  1. Preheat properly — at least five minutes, and verify the real temperature (more on that below).
  2. Prep the garment — lay flat, lint-roll, keep zips and seams off the platen.
  3. Pre-press for 3–5 seconds. This is the step everyone skips. Trapped moisture turns to steam under the platen and stops the adhesive bonding. It’s a leading cause of prints that bubble or peel later.
  4. Position the transfer print side down, film side up.
  5. First press at your fabric’s settings. Timing starts from full contact.
  6. Peel according to your film.
  7. Second press for 5–10 seconds through a cover sheet.
  8. Cool flat for a couple of minutes before folding.

Why the second press matters more than you think

The finishing press is what separates a print that fails at five washes from one that lasts fifty. It cross-links the adhesive deeper into the fibres, embeds the ink so the print feels like part of the shirt rather than a sticker, and seals the edges.

Your cover sheet controls the finish:

  • Parchment paper — matte, soft hand
  • Teflon/PTFE sheet — slight sheen, reusable (but never on nylon)
  • Silicone finishing sheet — softest and most durable result

What "medium pressure" actually means

Insufficient pressure is the most common DTF failure of all, and "medium" is uselessly vague on a manual press. Practical test: if you can close your press easily with one hand, it’s too light. Medium means noticeable resistance. Firm means a deliberate push to lock it.

On a pneumatic press, DTF generally wants 40–60 PSI, rising to 60–80 PSI for canvas, denim and heavy totes, and dropping to 20–40 PSI for light synthetics and leather.

Check your pressure is even: put a square of paper in each corner of the platen and close it. If one pulls out more easily than the others, your platen may be warped and isn’t pressing evenly.

Remember that thicker garments need more adjustment to achieve the same force at the print surface — and any time you swap platen size, reset your pressure.

Your press is probably lying to you

Heat press thermostats drift. The display shows the set point, not the platen surface, and an ageing or uncalibrated press can be out by 10–30°F. A 10°C error changes your results visibly.

Infrared thermometer (£15–£30) — quick and reusable, but be careful: a bare shiny platen reflects infrared and reads falsely low. Press a piece of paper or scrap fabric for 15 seconds and read that instead for a realistic figure.

Temperature test strips — disposable labels that change colour at set temperatures. They measure under real pressing conditions and are often more reliable than infrared on shiny surfaces.

Check for cold spots by taking readings at all four corners and the centre. Meaningful variation means an ageing or warped platen.

Check weekly as a minimum, daily if you’re running volume, and always when your results change unexpectedly.

On household irons: they’re built to remove wrinkles, not fuse graphics. Uneven soleplate heat, no accurate readout, no consistent pressure, and steam holes that break contact. Fine for a one-off in a pinch; not something you can guarantee.

Troubleshooting: six common faults

Peeling or lifting after washing — Almost always under-pressing, or moisture left in the garment, or a skipped second press. Increase pressure first, pre-press properly, and never skip the finishing press.

Cracking — Usually over-curing: too hot or too long. Reduce time by 2–3 seconds before you touch the temperature. Also check you haven’t placed the design over a high-stretch area.

Faded or dull colours — Over-cooked. Lower the temperature and verify what your platen is actually doing.

Film won’t release / ink stays on the carrier — Under-pressed, or peeled at the wrong temperature. Lay it back down, re-press 5–8 seconds with more pressure, and double-check your peel type.

Scorch marks or a shine box — Too hot for the fabric, usually polyester. Drop 5–10°C, shorten the dwell, and use a silicone cover sheet with a pressing pillow to soften the platen edge.

Dye migration — Excess heat gassing the garment’s dye into your white ink, typically showing 12–24 hours later. Stay below 150°C on polyester, cold peel, and use a low-temp or dye-blocking film.

To test for migration before a production run: press a white cover sheet onto the blank for 10 seconds. If the dye is unstable, you’ll see staining on the sheet straight away. Or apply one transfer and leave it 24 hours before committing.

The golden rule: an under-pressed transfer can be re-pressed. A scorched garment can’t be saved. When testing something new, start cooler and work up in 5–10°C steps, changing one variable at a time.

A note on UK blanks

A few quirks worth knowing with the blanks most UK decorators use:

Gildan — takes DTF beautifully, but several heather, dark-heather and safety colourways are 50/50 blends rather than 100% cotton. Drop to around 145–150°C on those.

Fruit of the Loom Valueweight — 100% cotton, strong bond, very predictable.

AWDis Just Hoods JH001 — the UK’s default hoodie. The standard 80/20 presses well on hoodie settings, but check the colourway: Charcoal runs around 52% cotton / 48% polyester and the heather shades are higher in polyester too. Treat those as blends and lower the heat.

Whatever the brand, test-press any colourway you haven’t used before. Dye behaviour varies by batch as well as by shade.

Aftercare — give this to your customers

  • Wait 24–48 hours before the first wash so the adhesive fully cures
  • Turn the garment inside out
  • Wash cool, 30°C or below, gentle cycle, mild detergent
  • No bleach and no fabric softener — softener leaves a film that attacks the bond
  • Air dry where possible, or tumble on low
  • Never iron directly on the print — inside out, or parchment over the top, low setting

Applied and cared for properly, a DTF print will comfortably see 50+ washes, and a well-executed one can reach around 100. Durability depends far more on how it was applied than on how it’s washed.
